About Hantascan

What is Hantascan?

Hantascan is a real-time hantavirus surveillance dashboard. It pulls outbreak data from multiple government and international health agencies, normalizes the reports into a unified format, and plots them on an interactive map. The goal is to make hantavirus surveillance accessible to researchers, public health professionals, travelers, and the general public — in 20 languages.

Data Sources

Hantascan ingests outbreak data from four official public health feeds, refreshed on an automated schedule:

• WHO Disease Outbreak News — Global disease outbreak news covering hantavirus events reported by member states.
• CDC NNDSS — U.S. nationally notifiable disease surveillance data including hantavirus pulmonary syndrome.
• Santé publique France (Odissé) — French national infectious disease surveillance platform tracking hantavirus cases.
• Chile ENO (CKAN) — Chilean mandatory notification system for infectious diseases including Andes virus.

Methodology

Each data source is polled on an automated schedule. Incoming reports are deduplicated by location and date, geocoded to latitude/longitude coordinates, and stored in a time-series database. The map dashboard reads from this normalized dataset. Case counts and death tolls reflect the latest snapshot from each source and are not independently verified by Hantascan.

Languages

Hantascan is available in 20 languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, Polish, Russian, Ukrainian, Turkish, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Hindi, Vietnamese, Thai, Indonesian, and Malay. All translations cover the full interface including the map, dashboard, and informational pages.
